PRAYERS
Lord, you gave Saint Peter Canisius
wisdom and courage to defend the Catholic faith.
By the help of his prayers
may all who seek the truth rejoice in finding You,
and may all who believe in You
be loyal in professing their faith.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
O God you endowed Your priest, St. Peter Canisius,
with holiness and learning for the defense of the Church.
Through his intercession,
grant that those who seek the truth my joyfully find You
and that the people of believers
may ever persevere in bearing witness to You.

PRAYER TO SAINT PETER CANISIUS
Dear Doctor and Defender of the Church,
to you the Master must have said:
“Well done, composer of books
which have taught and inspired countless persons in many lands.”
Help those who compose catechisms
to communicate the true teachings of Christ
in ways that can be understood by our contemporaries
so that they will be moved to follow Jesus.
Amen.
O God, origin and dispenser of all wisdom,
Who hast made the production of books
for the spiritual and general benefit of mankind
part of Thy Divine Providence,
and Who hast inspired Thy servant Peter Canisius
with an ardent desire for the collection of good books in libraries
and their dissemination among Thy people:
vouchsafe we pray that through his intercession and example
we devote ourselves wholeheartedly to the apostolate of books.
Assist us in taking care of the publications large and small
which are given into our charge,
and grant that through our ministration
they find their way into the hands of such
as will be truly benefitted, spiritually and otherwise, by their perusal.
We also pray that under St. Peter’s guardianship
our books may increase in number and general usefulness,
and be ever secure against theft and fire,
against hostile violence,
against the furies of weather and any kind of disaster
for the greater glory of Thy name
and the welfare of Thy people.

but may my heart always keep watch for You.
May Your right hand bless Your servants who love You.”
“May I be united with the praise that flows from You, Lord Jesus,
to all Your saints;
united with the gratitude drawn from Your heart, good Jesus,
that causes Your saints to thank You;
united with Your passion, good Jesus,
by which You took away our guilt;
united with the Divine longing that You had on earth for our salvation;
united with every prayer that welled from Your Divine heart, good Jesus,
and flowed into the hearts of Your saints.”

O Jesus, Friend of children,
Who from thy most tender years didst grow visibly in wisdom
and in grace before God and men;
Who at the age of twelve was seated in the Temple,
in the midst of the doctors,
listening to them attentively,
humbly asking them questions,
and exciting their admiration
by the prudence and wisdom of thy discourse;
Who didst receive so willingly the children,
blessing them and saying to Thy disciples:
“Let them come to Me, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven,”
inspire me as Thou didst inspire Saint Peter Canisius,
model and guide of the perfect Catechist,
with a profound respect and a holy affection for childhood,
a taste and a marked devotion
for instructing them in Christian doctrine,
a special aptitude in making them understand its mysteries
and love its beauties.
I ask this of Thee,
through the intercession of the blessed Virgin Mary.
